Dr Ashar Dhana

Dr. Ashar Dhana is a specialist dermatologist. He completed his medical training at the University of the Witwatersrand, where he graduated with the Health Sciences Merit Award. He has been recognized as a distinguished graduate and alumni of the University of the Witwatersrand. After earning his medical degree, he completed a Master of Public Health at Harvard University as a Fulbright Scholar, Oppenheimer Scholar, and Horace W. Goldsmith Fellow.

Dr. Dhana completed his specialty training in dermatology at Groote Schuur Academic Hospital and Red Cross Children’s Hospital, where he obtained his Fellowship of the College of Dermatologists of South Africa. He passed his dermatology specialist examinations with distinction, receiving the Jansen Research Foundation Medal and Peter-Gordon-Smith Medal for achieving the highest mark in the country in both of his dermatology specialist examinations. He also completed the dermatology specialist examination from the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom. At the University of Cape Town, he obtained his Master of Medicine in Dermatology with distinction.

Dr. Dhana has a keen interest in academic research. He completed his PhD at the University of Cape Town as a Fogarty HATTP Clinical Science Fellow, NRF scholar, and Harry Crossley Fellow. He was lead investigator for the 2021 World Health Organization HIV-associated tuberculosis screening guidelines, which formed part of his PhD work. He has published in several leading peer-reviewed medical journals including the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, British Journal of Dermatology​, JAMA Dermatology, and The Lancet Infectious Diseases.
